9/11 Memorial Trail in Athens, Georgia

Though it is far from the site of the attacks on September 11, 2001, this memorial trail commemorates the lives that were lost on that day.

My hike on day two of three began early in the morning as I climbed out of the car at the moment it stopped pouring rain. As I headed up the valley, the storm moved off to the south. Clouds add so much drama.

Make an Heritage Trail

Three days. Three hikes. Whew!

For day one there was this relatively short excursion on the north edge of town (the city was behind me when I took this) across grassy hills with open views and birds high above on the air currents. It was an opportunity to take a look at the city's newest trail.

Hilly trail on this morning's walk.

I love the woods, its how I rebalance

Been a bit too busy to get out and explore much, hopefully that will change in the coming week! Once it stops raining the trails will be gorgeous with early fall colors!

But the best will be get to come

It would sure be inspirational to write a book here.. it's pricey, I'm told. I can drive here in 20 minutes, so I'll never stay at the Liscombe Lodge or their cabins but they are situated in a great place.

There's (LIscomb Trail ) We went up under the bridge in our boat. NO one else does that.

, Little Liscomb & Liscomb Mills, no E ending, except on the Tourist Lodge spelling

We hiked in an area west of Arnhem and north of Oosterbeek in the Netherlands where ancient holloways lead to prehistoric burial mounds.

There's something so neat about in , especially ones that make you feel like you are walking in , even if you're in the middle of the

Seeing actual people walking along makes a place actually feel alive and used as opposed to giant metal boxes speeding by. It grows community and is far more .

Pictured above: Wildcat Mountain from Cascade Mountain shot 9/12. 40 years ago Sunday: When it finished with the cliffs, the Appalachian Trail traversed about a zillion steep little knobs known as the Wild Kittens. Thats a really cute name, but I came I thought much more appropriate as I struggled over the little bastards.

Hmm. Seems like the decision to keep the isnt based on safety.
Was it ever I supported the decision to close it, for safety reasons, but I no longer believe that was the original motivation. Was it a ruse

Believe people when they show you who they are.

hikers on the trails report far more fires than they start.

40 years ago Friday: After Eisenhower, the trail descended into a col before another stiff climb up Mount Franklin, the first 5000-footer of the day. The sky had cleared very nicely by the time I reached this peak.

40 years ago Friday: It was mostly cloudy in Crawford Notch at 12:30 when I set out on the . A nice, stiff breeze was blowing, the air was fresh and dry, and the day was much cooler than the last few had been. As usual, that 12:30 start was considerably later than I wanted it to be.

From 5/24/83: I awoke cold and clammy this morning and lay in my sleeping bag fascinated, watching tiny wisps of cloud swirl in through the gaping holes in the shelters wall above my head, drift leisurely across the ceiling, and slip out of the open side.
