Make an Heritage Trail

June 2, 1983: The AT dipped down slightly into Ash Gap and followed moderate grades from there almost to the crest of Roan, but one more thigh-killer was lurking right at the end. Finally, I dragged myself onto the crest of a grassy little knoll and the sprawling summit plateau unfolded before me.

Joa. Kann man so machen.

A big ole hill is rough after 2+ weeks of travel and flats. Speed work is not the same as hill work. But the views are still the best.

June 13, 1983: Up until three years ago, the Appalachian Trail had turned right and followed the crest of Big Walker for many miles, but barely a trace of the old crestline trail was visible. Today, the AT reaches the top and descends immediately along the opposite slope into the next valley.

There are 15,000+ Colorado hiking trails in, some great and some less so. Here are 11 of the best hikes in the state, ranging from easy to difficult treks, with alpine lakes, waterfalls, peaks, and more.

South Manchester Rail Trail, NH
4 1.9 miles each way Easy difficulty

Previously hidden on an old disused railroad, the restored Cohas Brook Trestle Bridge and trail extension is a new jewel in Manchester's crown.

September 3, 1983: The spruce gradually diminished in height as I ascended the narrow ridge crest. Soon, they were little more than stunted dwarfs, and I was surrounded by panoramic views.

May 13, 1983: Heading north from Springer Mountain, the tiny unincorporated community of Wesser, North Carolina is the first trail town through which the physically passes. This corner of Wesser is a narrow strip along the floor of the deep, heavily-wooded, steep-walled gorge which the Nantahala River has gouged through the mountains.

May 10, 1983: The trail down the other side of Standing Indian was fascinating. We followed wide, grassy paths (old woods roads) along a frequently narrow ridge crest through countless thickets of rhododendron.

June 12, 1983: Before 6:30, as the first faint blue twilight tinged the blackness, I was on my way. The woods were at their prettiest in those fleeting moments before sunrise I promised myself that I would try to get early starts more often.

July 13, 1983: On the other side of I-70, the stiff climb up Pine Knob was a harbinger of things to come. I had been told, and I could see for myself from scanning the elevation profiles on my map, that the AT becomes much more rugged in the northern half of Maryland. I stopped at Pine Knob Shelter in order to get water.

It never ceases to amaze me that whenever I walk my personal trail, things change, sometimes subtly, sometimes drastically, yet impressive and mostly beautifully every time.

May 10, 1983: The journeyed through a landscape of twisted masses of rhododendron jungles breached by small, rocky streams bordered by profusions of growth, even wilder and more densely entangled. At times, the trail was a tunnel, completely encircled by rhododendron, their thickly interwoven branches forming walls and a roof.

Finally felt well enough to do some walking between medical appointments, and explored this delightful rail line parallel to Winchester Avenue in Campbell. Although well maintained, its only use had been to supply fuel a few times a week to the Lehigh Cement Plant in Cupertino, which suspended operations in 2020. Now that the plant is closing, I suspect this line will be abandoned entirely.

The surprising part is how the track is paralleled by an urban trail. Normally, walking along a railroad track is illegal: it's considered trespassing on a railroad right of way. But this illegal path even has professionally placed paving stones at the entrance and exit of the trestle crossing CA-85.

June 9, 1983: I eased the puppy off my pack and lifted it onto my shoulders. The Appalachian Trail crossed Virginia Highway 601, a narrow, rural road, and went through an open field for a short distance before disappearing into the trees. I said good-bye to my two new friends and turned away, crossing the road and the field without looking back.

August 9, 1983: Charlie started hiking at 8:00, just before a lively little thundershower kicked up. Pete and I waited it out a while before we left. Petes small transistor radio, on which we heard the forecast, called for widely scattered showers, so we had reason to believe that it would blow over quickly. It did. When it stopped, we were quickly on our way.
