May 18, 1983: Derrick Knob shelter was in an excellent spot, similar in appearance to Russell Field. About a dozen small deer were wandering around nibbling the grass and the lower leaves, and they let me approach surprisingly close.

Good hiking on the mountain this afternoon. Nice warm sunny day. T-shirt weather!

Johnson Beach in Pensacola, Florida

A pristine beach on the Gulf of Mexico with deep ties to Pensacolas Black community.

May 18, 1983: A lot of ups and downs along a rolling stretch of ridge crest brought us to Russell Field Shelter a beautiful spot. Years ago, before these mountains became a national park, folks used to farm their ridgetops.

July 10, 1983: Shortly afterward, the trail left the road, went into the woods, and entered West Virginia. The last few miles of the Appalachian Trail in Virginia drifted back and forth across its state line with West Virginia. The trail for the most part was on rocky old woods roads.

Last call to join us for a Snowshoe Adventure with Waterloo Region Nature this Thursday at 1:00 p.m. See here to register:

June 5, 1983: Although the hiking was rather easy from that point on, the woods continued to be very buggy. The heat and humidity of the day were slow to abate as the afternoon wore on. The Appalachian Trail followed the ridge with no major climbs or descents to Vanderventer Shelter. It was 5:00 when I arrived.

Burnin' Sky (h/t Paul Rodgers and Bad Company), Hidden Lake, Fall Mountain, Plymouth, Connecticut. November 7, 2020, 4:51 PM.

Big spiderweb in the mountain laurel, Sleeping Giant State Park, Hamden, Connecticut. June 1, 2023, 7:44 PM.

August 13, 1983: The Appalachian Trail went into Dark Entry Ravine, ascending through the perpetual twilight silence of an old hemlock forest. Long years of decomposing fallen needles had buried the boulder-strewn ground and transformed it into a soft, lumpy carpet. It was lovely, even though the stream was barely running.

Dramatic sunset just off the Tunxis Trail. Near New Britain Reservoir, Wolcott, Connecticut. September 8, 2020, 7:10 PM.

Conditions pretty icy, but what a gorgeous weather we had today.

May 6, 1983: My camera received heavy use this morning as well, as I traversed another group of scenic ridges with equally picturesque names.

Translated the latest map of and added it to the Wiki. Be aware it contains locations introduced in still unlocalised games.

September 30, 1983: After the shelter, the AT descended for a half-mile to Pemadumcook Lake, which was even bigger than Lower Jo-Mary. A short side trail led to a point along the shore with an awesome view of Katahdin across the lake, but only the dimmest outline of the mountain was visible through the haze. It looked even closer, but it still seemed like a dream.

Ich war kurz im Elm. Es war sehr matschig. Aber ich hab nen neuen Trail gefunden.

One Of The Best Campgrounds In Wisconsin Is Open For Adventure Year-Round

July 5, 1983: Late in the day, the AT began to skirt a huge complex called Big Meadows which sprawled across acres of ridge crest. A short climb on a side trail brought me to the summit of Black Rock (not to be confused with Blackrock, a summit I traversed further south in Shenandoah).

Has anyone seen this bill from the US state of

It seems to want to basically treat all as motorcycles, but sets out nonsense regulations that are in some cases also easy to circumvent

A lot of this bill reads like 'EBIKES ARE NOT NORMAL BIKES AND THEREFORE WE WILL PUNISH THEM'

On the other hand, there are a couple of ideas here that aren't terrible, but they're strangled by the rest of the document

Check it:

June 1, 1983: I have never seen a storm just collapse like this. Within minutes, the day had gone from rainy and cold and windy to sunny and warm and breezy. The lingering clouds adding a touch of drama to the tableau were visibly shrinking right before my eyes.

Soft summer sunset at Lost Ponds. Mattatuck State Forest, Plymouth, Connecticut. July 14, 2018, 7:30 PM.

Fade to September sunset, New Britain Reservoir, Wolcott, Connecticut. August 31, 2020, 7:35 PM.

August 10, 1983: We did not leave her house until 6:00, and we still had eight more miles to go in order to reach the side trail to the shelter, and another half-mile on the side trail. About two hours of daylight remained. At the house, we learned that it was supposed to rain tonight, so we were determined to make it.

The Great American Rail-Trail

"A grand scheme of the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy to build a continuous, off-road multi-use trail from the National Mall in Washington, D.C. to the Pacific Ocean in Washington State a trail across the entire United States."

This article is more about connecting to the trail, but it's pretty interesting.

September 12, 1983: I had one final meal of solid food before resuming the backpacking phase of my trip today and my return to gourmet fare like rice and instant oatmeal. I started on the trail at 1:45 this afternoon. That was okay. There will be plenty of time to revel in the freedom of backpacking once again. About three weeks remain in this adventure.

Im just thinking about how the mountain bikers on my local trails today, and honestly every day I go out, are very considerate and polite. People use bells consistently to announce their presence, and several times someone saw me coming up the trail, and waited to start the segment until I had come all the way up so that they wouldnt be barreling down at the same time.
I appreciate you, mountain cyclists!

October wetlands, New Britain Reservoir, Wolcott, Connecticut. October 19, 2019, 2:38 PM.

China Ranch Date Farm & Bakery.

Had a great hike and a date shake.

Tecopa, California.

I miss this trail. It was always empty and peaceful to run through.
