40 years ago today: Took a day off the trail. From 6/3/83: The new trail route, for most of the distance to Don Nelan Shelter, either passed through private lands or followed rural lanes. From the highway, it climbed steeply through high pastures baking under a relentless sun.

40 years ago today: Took a day off the trail. From 8/8/83: I had hiked the preceding four miles without stopping, in one-and-a-half hours. I now possessed a half-hour cushion for my attempt to reach the monastery. I stumbled to the top of the ridge, where the Appalachian Trail came out onto an old dirt road.

I'm going to mark my calendar for next year's Sea to Sound as soon as they tell us the dates! Day Three was beautiful and I want to do this again. What a feeling of freedom to ride for 70 miles the past 3 days, almost every last foot of it on a separated trail.

40 years ago today: A heavy thundershower struck. It was nothing special compared to some of the boomers I had encountered down south, but I was thoroughly soaked climbing the next ridge. That felt like an improvement over the sauna in which I had been hiking earlier this afternoon.

40 years ago today: The haze remained dense, and clouds were slowly but steadily on the increase all day. As I began the final ascent of Mount Killington, I had already accepted the fact that dazzling panoramas were not in the cards this afternoon. The does not actually traverse Killingtons summit. The final quarter-mile is on a steep, rocky side trail.

40 years ago today: The Appalachian Trail descended very slightly from the summit before crossing two pastures on either side of a paved road. The first one was an adventure for a city boy like me. It was teeming with cows, large bodies sprawled all around the trail route.

40 years ago today: The first couple of miles followed a congenial little brook up to Little Rock Pond. I have seen so many mountain lakes lately, but this may have been the nicest of all. Nestled in a narrow valley between two good-sized peaks,

40 years ago today: The final summit of the day was 2850-foot Baker Peak, which the Appalachian Trail ascended after leaving the lake. This was the lowest summit of the day, so I was not expecting much.

I spend a lot of time at night. It's fascinating to me what different we encounter and when. There's a late-spring skunk season, mid-summer toad season, and then last night apparently marks the start of nighthawk season. Nearly stood on one of these guys last night. They look *exactly* like rocks until they flutter up when you're a meter away and scare the crap out of you.
